What are the Expression, Soul Urge and Personality Numbers?

In Pythagorean numerology your full birth name is the second pillar of the chart, next to your date of birth. Every letter has a value from 1 to 9, and three different sums of those values give three core numbers.

The Expression Number, also called the Destiny Number in many Western books, uses every letter. It describes your natural talents and what you are built to accomplish. The Soul Urge Number, or Heart’s Desire, uses only the vowels and describes your inner motivation. The Personality Number uses only the consonants and describes the impression you make on others.

The Pythagorean letter chart

The Pythagorean system counts through the alphabet in order: A is 1, B is 2 and so on up to I, which is 9. Then the count starts again at J. Unlike the Chaldean chart, every number from 1 to 9 is used.

How to calculate your name numbers

  1. Write your full birth name, including every middle name.
  2. Give each letter its value from the chart.
  3. Add the values in each name and reduce each name to one digit, keeping 11, 22 and 33.
  4. Add the reduced names together and reduce again. This is the Expression Number.
  5. Repeat with only the vowels for the Soul Urge, and with only the consonants for the Personality Number.

For example, ASHA is 1 + 1 + 8 + 1 = 11, a master number, so it stays 11. VERMA is 4 + 5 + 9 + 4 + 1 = 23, and 2 + 3 = 5. Then 11 + 5 = 16 and 1 + 6 = 7. The Expression Number is 7, written 16/7 because it passes through the karmic debt number 16.

This calculator treats Y as a consonant. Some numerologists count Y as a vowel when it sounds like one, as in “Lynn”. If your name has a Y that sounds like a vowel, you can read both versions.

How the three numbers work together

Think of the Soul Urge as what you want, the Personality as what people see, and the Expression as what you actually do. When the three numbers are similar, you tend to feel consistent inside and out. When they are very different, you may feel that people misread you, or that your daily work does not satisfy your deeper needs.

Comparing the numbers is useful in itself. A Soul Urge of 7 with a Personality of 3 describes someone who looks sociable but needs a lot of quiet. A Soul Urge of 5 with an Expression of 4 describes someone whose talent lies in structure but whose heart wants change.

The Maturity Number, also called the Power Number

The Maturity Number is your Life Path plus your Expression Number, reduced. It describes a goal that becomes clearer with age, usually from your mid-thirties onwards. Some numerologists call the same sum the Power Number or the Reality Number.

In the example, a Life Path of 4 plus an Expression of 7 gives 11, a master number. The Maturity Number does not replace your other numbers. It shows where they are leading as you gain experience.

Pythagorean and Chaldean name numbers

AnkJyoti also has a Chaldean name calculator. The Chaldean chart gives letters values from 1 to 8 by their sound and is the standard for name analysis in India. The Pythagorean chart on this page counts through the alphabet and is the standard in Western numerology.

The two systems answer different questions. The Chaldean name number is read against your Vedic birth numbers to check harmony. The Pythagorean numbers describe your talents, motives and image. Using both gives a fuller picture of your name.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use my birth name or the name I use now?

Use your full birth name, as written on your birth certificate, for the core numbers. You can calculate a current name or nickname separately to see the energy you use day to day.

Why is the Expression Number also called the Destiny Number?

Many Western books call it the Destiny Number because it shows what you are meant to accomplish. On AnkJyoti, Destiny Number means the Vedic number from your date of birth, so we call this one the Expression Number to avoid confusion.

Is Y a vowel or a consonant?

This calculator always counts Y as a consonant. Some numerologists count it as a vowel when it is sounded as one. If your name has such a Y, compare both readings.

What if my name is written in another alphabet?

The Pythagorean chart is defined for the Latin alphabet. Write your name the way it is spelled in Latin letters, for example on your passport.
