What is Chaldean name numerology?
Chaldean numerology gives each letter of the alphabet a number from 1 to 8 according to its sound. Add the numbers of the letters in your name and you get a compound number; reduce it to a single digit and you have your name number, sometimes called the Namank in Indian numerology.
Where your Psychic and Destiny Numbers come from your date of birth and cannot change, your name is the part of your numerology you live with every day and can, in principle, choose. That is why name numerology is so popular for babies, businesses, brands and stage names, and why it is always read together with your birth numbers.
A brief history of Chaldean numerology
The Chaldeans were the people of southern Mesopotamia whose kings ruled Babylon in the first millennium BCE. Their priests were famous across the ancient world as astronomers and astrologers — so famous that in Greek and Latin the word “Chaldean” came to mean an astrologer.
The system now called Chaldean numerology is best known through Cheiro, the stage name of the Irish palmist William John Warner (1866–1936), whose Book of Numbers popularised the letter chart and the meanings of compound numbers in the early twentieth century. Historians find little direct evidence that the Babylonians used this exact chart; the name honours their reputation as masters of number and the heavens.
Chaldean values are based on the sound or vibration of each letter rather than its position in the alphabet, which distinguishes them from the later Pythagorean system that simply counts A=1 to I=9. The number 9 is given to no letter: it was held to be sacred and complete. In India the Chaldean chart became the standard for name analysis during the twentieth century, and adjusting the spelling of a name to harmonise with one’s birth numbers is now a common practice.
The Chaldean letter chart
Each letter is assigned a value from 1 to 8. Letters with similar sounds often share a value, and no letter has the value 9.
| Value | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A I J Q Y |
| 2 | B K R |
| 3 | C G L S |
| 4 | D M T |
| 5 | E H N X |
| 6 | U V W |
| 7 | O Z |
| 8 | F P |
How to calculate your name number
- Choose the name you use most — the one on your signature, business card or the one people call you.
- Convert every letter into its number using the chart above.
- Add the numbers for each word, then add the words together. This total is your compound number.
- Reduce the compound number to a single digit by adding its digits. This is your name number.
- Compare the name number with your Psychic and Destiny Numbers to see whether they are in harmony.
For example, ASHA is 1 + 3 + 5 + 1 = 10 and VERMA is 6 + 5 + 2 + 4 + 1 = 18. The compound number is 10 + 18 = 28, and 2 + 8 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. Asha Verma’s name number is 1, ruled by the Sun.
Accented letters count as their plain letter (É as E, Ç as C, Ñ as N). Names written in Devanagari, Arabic or other scripts should be spelled in Latin letters the way they appear in your passport or on social media.
Meanings of the name numbers 1 to 9

Compound numbers
Before reducing to a single digit, Chaldean numerology also reads the compound number itself. In Cheiro’s system the numbers from 10 to 52 each have a traditional meaning: 10 is the Wheel of Fortune, 16 the Shattered Citadel and 23 the Royal Star of the Lion, for example. The single digit gives the core vibration; the compound adds nuance. Our calculator shows both so you can explore further.
Your name and your birth numbers
In Indian practice a name number is considered supportive when its planet is friendly to the planets of your Psychic and Destiny Numbers, workable when neutral, and challenging when the planets are uneasy together. Add your date of birth to the calculator to see this harmony instantly.
If the harmony is mixed, there is no cause for alarm. Many people simply notice the qualities their name brings and balance them consciously. Others choose a small spelling change, such as doubling a letter, for a business or stage name. Whatever you decide, your name is part of your identity and story — change it only if the new name genuinely feels like you.
Frequently asked questions
Which name should I use: my full name or my first name?
Use the name you are known by most often. Many numerologists calculate both the full name and the everyday name; the everyday name is thought to have the strongest daily influence.
Why does no letter have the value 9 in Chaldean numerology?
Tradition holds 9 to be a sacred, complete number, so it is not assigned to any letter. It can still appear as a total or a name number.
Can changing the spelling of my name change my luck?
Numerology suggests a name in harmony with your birth numbers is more supportive, and many people adjust spellings for that reason. There is no scientific evidence that it changes outcomes, so treat it as a personal and symbolic choice.
How do I calculate a name written in Hindi or Arabic?
The Chaldean chart is defined for the Latin alphabet. Write your name in Latin letters the way you normally spell it in English, for example on your passport.
